Zelenskyy Proposes Energy Ceasefire: Urges Tri-Nation Talks for Resolution

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged U.S. President Donald Trump to facilitate a crucial trilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing the need for world leaders to act quickly to resolve the ongoing war.

Zelenskyy’s conversation with Trump occurred during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday, providing a high-level opportunity for discussion concerning Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the necessity for advanced U.S. air defense systems, and essential security guarantees for the Ukrainian capital.

A priority item on Ukraine’s agenda includes a winter package. This would entail the provision of Patriot missile systems and the facilitation of domestic production licenses for these advanced weapons. Zelenskyy stated, “President Trump, our teams, and I spoke about how to end the war. This is the priority. We are ready. I’m not sure Russia is ready as of today, but we discussed an energy ceasefire,” summarizing his dialogue after the meeting at the UNGA.

During the discussion, Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine was willing to agree to an energy truce, contingent upon Russia refraining from attacking Ukraine’s energy, electricity, heating infrastructure, and water supplies. In the broader context, Trump previously urged Ukraine to halt its drone strikes against Russian oil refineries, expressing concern over the global repercussions, including rising U.S. diesel prices, stemming from the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran.

In a social media post prior to the meeting, Trump noted that Russia had “unfortunately lost control” of its diesel oil industry due to the ongoing war. “I think the most important move President Trump can make – he can organize a trilateral meeting where the leaders can raise all the sensitive issues and try to end the war,” Zelenskyy asserted, indicating his readiness to meet directly with both Trump and Putin to facilitate peace. “I am ready anytime when all sides are prepared. We must move swiftly,” he added.

In response to Zelenskyy’s appeal, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov remarked that a meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy before detailed expert-level discussions would be ineffective. “Regarding a meeting with Zelensky, Putin has said that if he wishes, he can come to Moscow,” Peskov stated, providing insight into Russia’s position.

During his discussion with reporters following the meeting with Zelenskyy, Trump indicated that he had spoken with the Ukrainian president about methods to resolve the conflict. He emphasized his commitment to facilitating a diplomatic solution in his address to UNGA delegates, stating, “We will get that one done.”

While recent diplomatic negotiations have slowed as the U.S. redirected its attention toward the conflict with Iran, envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff visited Ukraine for discussions with Zelenskyy just earlier this month.

In a strategic move, Ukraine has increased its assaults on Russian oil facilities and essential logistical infrastructures. Zelenskyy also encouraged Trump to engage in dialogue with Chinese President Xi Jinping to help leverage China’s influence over Putin during his address following their meeting.

“I conveyed to the President, quite openly, that we believe if he engages President Xi – he has influence on Putin. If we want to end this war, not just through rhetoric, we all need to work tirelessly for the sake of the people,” Zelenskyy stated, underscoring the urgency of collaborative efforts to resolve the conflict.

As the situation deteriorates, Ukraine remains steadfast, asserting that Russian energy sites are legitimate military targets. This stance comes against a backdrop of the Russian Defense Ministry’s intentions to conduct “massive strikes” on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, heightening concerns regarding the possibility of a harsh winter assault.
